Preparing for Your Procedure

Ambulatory Surgery Center of Killeen

After scheduling an interventional pain treatment at the Ambulatory Surgery Center of Killeen, please read the instructions below to prepare for your procedure. Your doctor may also have additional directions that he will discuss with you. For your safety, it is especially important to adhere to the following medication guidelines:

MEDICATIONS: Medications can be taken ONLY 2 HOURS BEFORE your procedure, with a small sip of water ONLY. No clear liquids of any kind 2 hours before your procedure.

In most cases, you will need to discontinue any blood thinners (anticoagulants) you may be taking until after the procedure. Please be sure to consult the doctor who prescribed the medication to obtain written clearance for doing so. Do NOT stop taking any medication without authorization from the prescribing physician. This includes the following blood thinners:

  • Lovenox and Xarelto – 24 hours prior to the procedure
  • Pradaxa – 48 hours (2 days) prior to the procedure
  • Effient – 10 days prior to procedure
  • Plavix, Ticlid, and Aggrenox – 7 days prior to the procedure
  • Coumadin (Warfarin) – 5 days prior to the procedure (lab work required no more than 24 hours prior to procedure)
  • Brilinta – 5 days prior to the procedure
  • Fish Oil > 2000 mg/day

In addition, you should discontinue all aspirin products (Bayer, Excedrin, Anacin, BC Powder, etc.) 5 days before the procedure, as well as herbal remedies including Feverfew and anything beginning with the letter G. If you are on any antibiotics, call and let us know. We may need to reschedule your appointment.

Unless instructed by your pain doctor, you may continue to take other prescribed medications, including those for high blood pressure or any kind of heart condition. On the day of your procedure, please take your meds with only a few sips of water.

FOODS/LIQUIDS: Do not eat or drink anything within eight (8) hours of the scheduled procedure time, except for small sips of water with required medications.

ILLNESS: If you become ill, including sore throat, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, urinary tract infection, you will need to reschedule your procedure.

CANCELLATIONS: If you need to cancel your procedure, please notify us at least 24 hours in advance. If a last-minute emergency arises, please contact us at (254) 415-7673 as soon as possible.

One of our staff members will contact you to address any outstanding information and provide instructions for the day of your procedure. If you have any questions, please call the Ambulatory Surgery Center of Killeen at (254) 415-7673.
